The Quit and Win Chinese Smoking Reduction Campaign was conducted in 2018 by Chinese Australian Services Society (CASS) in partnership with NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service (MHCS). Despite significant decline in the proportion of Australian adults who smoke, Chinese men remain a group with relatively high rates of smoking and resistance to quitting. Consequently, this campaign targeted Chinese males living in NSW identified as a population group with a high incidence of smoking and resistance to quitting.

This project was based on an extensive global literature reviews. The literature review was designed to identify the most successful strategies for reducing smoking, as well as barriers and challenges to address in smoking cessation campaigns, particularly in relation to Chinese communities. The primary activity undertaken was a ‘Quit & Win’ competition conducted between June and October 2018. This offered a prize – a 3-night spa holiday to Moree in northern NSW to the value of $500 – for the selected winner who could demonstrate successful quitting after three months.

The ‘Quit & Win’ competition was promoted through a range of media advertising, traditional media relations and publicity, social media, posters, information flyers, and events.
